SPEARMAN ISD: Student Attendance

Dear Parents & Students,
Spearman Independent School District is dedicated to the academic achievement and success for all scholars.  Regular attendance is critically important, because students who are absent lose instructional seat time, thus creating a lost opportunity to learn, ask questions, and engage in class activities.  Poor attendance can be excused, unexcused absences, or truancies, which ultimately impacts our student’s academic performance as well as funding provided to the district by the state of Texas called ADA (average daily attendance).  This is where we need your help and joint collaboration by ensuring the following is done if your child will be absent, late, or leave early from school:
Keep Connected-On the date of the absence, please send either a signed parental note or call the school explaining the reason for that day(s) absence. If your child needed medical attention, please provide appropriate documentation via a Doctor’s note.  Keep in mind that Gus Birdwell Elementary will only be accepting written parent notes.
Keep Students Healthy-Make sure your child gets enough sleep, eats well, and exercises.  If you are not certain whether to send your child to school due to illness, call your local health-provider for guidance.  If your child must miss school more than 3 days, please contact the school attendance clerk as soon as possible to determine what documentation is required.
Keep Students Safe-In the event that a student is not present during 1st period, the school attendance clerks will attempt to contact their guardian/parents via a phone call if we have not been notified.  It is a priority for the district to know the whereabouts of all students at all time.
Below is information regarding Excused and Unexcused absences along with the proper documentation requirements for an absence to be excused at Spearman ISD.  All absences will be documented as unexcused until appropriate documentation is received by school campus within 2 days.  As always, if you have any questions regarding your student’s attendance, please do not hesitate to reach out to your campus attendance clerks.
Respectfully,
James Layman
