The October Students of the Month at Spearman High School are seniors, Jossy Barrett and Hector Diaz.
Jossy Barrett is the daughter of Evans Barrett. She has two older sisters, Anna and Cady Barrett. While in high school, Jossy has been involved in Yearbook, Spearman Lynxette tennis, UIL One Act Play, National Honor Society, and FFA. She currently works at the Hansford County Vet Clinic. She received the Top Student of the Year Award in Accounting, was named the Top Girls Tennis Player of the Year her freshman and junior years, and was a member of the 4th place overall team in One Act Play. She has also been listed on the A Honor Roll throughout high school. In her spare time, Jossy enjoys playing tennis and hanging out with her friends. Her future plans include attending Tarleton State University to major in Animal Science – PreVet. She plans to further her education in vet school. Jossy’s event she most looks forward to at Spearman High School is graduation. “I am ready to move forward in my life.” When asked to describe her senior year in three words, Jossy says, “It’s flying by!” Jossy states the best that about Spearman is, “I like the small community. People are helpful and always looking out for you.” Jossy’s most influential teachers during her school years are Ms. Lisa Carthel and Mrs. Shelby Reagan.
Hector Diaz is the son of Hector and Delma Diaz. He has one younger brother, Gio Diaz. Hector has been active in Spearman Lynx cross country, basketball, track and tennis, Green Cord Program, and 4-H. While in high school, he has been named the Happy State Bank Athlete of the Week, First Team All-District in basketball, and has been listed on the Honor Roll throughout high school. Most recently, he was a member of the Boys JV Cross Country team that placed first at district and Hector earned the gold medal in that event, as well. In his spare time, Hector enjoys hunting and fishing and spending time with friends and family. Hector’s plans after high school are to attend Oklahoma State University and complete his Financial Business Degree. Hector’s most memorable high school moment was his freshman year. “People brought full size fruits to lunch and had a full food fight in the cafeteria. I remember seeing a watermelon fly across the room.” When asked to describe his senior year in 3 words, Hector states, “Memorable, Stressful, and Awakening!” His advice to underclassmen is, “Don’t take these short years for granted.” Hector’s most influential teacher during his school years is Dr. Mike Ralston.
