The SJH GT students did a "TREE"mendous job sketching trees with charcoal. They were shown the steps of creating a tree, but each of them did an awesome job of adding their own artistic flare by choosing the right amount of shading for contrast. Without a doubt, SJH GT students are "TREE"mendous in every way!

Gus Birdwell Elementary Announces Teacher of the Year Vanessa Garcia teaches third grade at Gus Birdwell Elementary. She serves on the Teacher Voice and Campus Education Improvement committees. “Don’t let your ice cream melt while counting someone else’s sprinkles” is the quote you will find on Vanessa Garcia’s door this year. This is her way of teaching her students to focus on their own talents and not dwell on what others have. Mrs. Garcia is an incredible teacher, and that is truly an understatement. She is quiet and humble, efficient and organized. She is ALWAYS teaching, and her students are engaged and listening. She cares about her students on a personal level and sees them not only as her students, but as young children wanting to learn to be the best version of themselves. Mrs. Garcia has a gift of seeing each student individually and not just as a group. The very reason she is so LOVED by all of her students. Just like the quote on her door, she promotes confidence. She gives affirmations and helps students focus on their strengths, whatever those strengths may be. She treats her students with respect, so in turn her students also treat her with respect and have more of a desire to learn from her. They LOVE her. Mrs. Garcia bought a beanie for a student this year who didn’t have one in the cold. Her students give her their athletic buttons to wear and she says “I feel so honored, thank you!” to EACH and every child who gives her one. Finally, her students invite Mrs. Garcia to their outside special occasions, such as activities at church. This is more than being a teacher, this is a calling. Mrs. Garcia makes the world of education a better place, and Spearman ISD is blessed to have her. She is so deserving of being Gus Birdwell Elementary Teacher of the Year,” shared a coworker. Other coworkers added, “She is willing to do anything and everything to help kids succeed. She works hard to make her classroom an inviting place for every kid.” “Vanessa’s instruction is structured, prepared, and she differentiates for student needs. She is very consistent.” Mrs. Garcia is a teacher who is very intentional in everything she does for our students. She works hard in the classroom to be the best teacher she can be, but most importantly she is devoted to building genuine relationships with her students. She is a humble leader that serves with gratitude and does not expect anything in return. She advocates for students and is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that all students feel seen. Mrs. Garcia has high expectations for herself, and it shows within her classroom. She leads by example. As a colleague, Mrs. Garcia is a good listener, great supporter, and just all around a good human being. I am very proud to have Mrs. Garcia at GBE. She helps students see the best in themselves, love others, and makes this world a better place,” commented Mrs. Olmos, Gus Birdwell Elementary Principal. Congratulations on a well-deserved award!

Spearman Junior High Announces Teacher of the Year Brian Beck teaches social studies at Spearman Junior High. Beck has previously been named Employee of the Month. A coworker shared, “Mr. Beck is dedicated to empowering our students with knowledge and understanding.” Another coworker added, “Mr. Beck is always very organized. Ever since he was my history teacher years back, Mr. Beck would always know how to explain and teach history in a way every student would understand it. I go to some of his classes to help students, and he is very confident. All students respect him. He always prepares for his classes ahead of time and helps co-teach another teacher. Mr. Beck is an amazing history teacher!! “Brian has a passion for teaching and helping students learn. He takes teaching seriously and cares about his students. He comes to school with a positive attitude each day. Brian also coordinates UIL every year and does such a great job,” stated a coworker. Craig Black, Spearman Junior High Principal shared, “He leads the Spearman Junior High staff and students with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) in organizing and signing students up for respective teams. He is a highly effective classroom teacher and manages the classroom well. The management of data comes effortlessly for him, and he plans accordingly to the needs of the students.” Congratulations, Mr. Beck, on a job well done!

Spearman High School Announces Teacher of the Year Michael Lozano teaches sports medicine and is the district athletic trainer. He has worked for Spearman ISD for eleven years. “Michael is a team player and is willing to assist wherever possible. He is a great role model for our students, deeply cares about their well-being, both physically, and emotionally. His positive attitude sets him apart from others,” stated James Layman. A coworker shared, “Coach Lozano has created an athletic sports training program at Spearman ISD. Through his program, he has influenced many students to start a career as an athletic trainer or physical therapist. He has created sports medicine classes, which involved writing and developing his scope and sequence to develop the classes. He makes his class challenging yet fun. He is creative with his lessons and makes games such as Athlete Dungeon and Dragon’s to help his students learn the content. Outside of class, Michael trains Olympic Weightlifting athletes. I have had the pleasure of working with him at the gym. He is a role model and a coach who understands how to motivate and push athletes to the highest competition levels. If you look at Michael's program, many of his trainers are young women. I love that Michael is a solid male figure in their life. He teaches his trainers the importance of having/being a strong family and Christian man.” “I feel like Michael gets overlooked a lot and he does so much for our students. He loves and cares for their academics, and their well-being physically. Whether that is with injuries or with the weight training for the girls. He has a big load in my opinion and does a great job,” stated another coworker. Congratulations, Coach Lozano, on this very deserving award!
