Students in K-8 schools in Texas are being sent home with child identification kits, meant to help identify kids in the unlikely event they go missing, get abducted, or are trafficked.
The kits are being distributed by local schools as required by an amendment to Texas' education code law that passed in the state legislature in the spring of 2021. Texas Senate Bill 2158 mandates the Texas Education Agency provide "inkless, in-home fingerprint and DNA identification kits" such as the kits from the National Child Identification Program to kindergarten, elementary and middle school students and their parents or custodians.
All K -7 Spearman ISD student should be bringing home a kit this week. Do not send the kit back to school. Complete it and put it somewhere safe in case you need it. Once we receive more kits, 8th grade students will bring those home.

October Lion’s Club Students of the Month
The October Lion’s Club Students of the Month at Spearman High School are seniors, Emily Vigil and Shad Whiteley.
Emily Vigil is the daughter of Melissa Vigil. She has one older sister, Briana Vigil, and a dog named Koco. Emily is a member of National Honor Society, where she is currently serving as the NHS Historian, Student Council, where she is serving as the STUCO secretary, UIL Academics, and Spearman Lynx Marching Band, where she is currently the head Drum Major. In previous years, she has participated in FCCLA, serving as the Freshman Representative and the Region Leadership Board, and Art Club, where she served as the Historian. She has been listed on the Honor Roll throughout high school, received a 1 rating at the Texas Region solo and ensemble competition and the Texas State solo and Ensemble competition and received the OPSU Art Jubilee Photography Merit Award in both 2021 and 2022. She has also been named the Top Student of the Year in Principles of Human Service, Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance, Art 2, Art 3, and Physics. In her spare time, Emily enjoys baking, playing with her dog, and playing the marimba. She also enjoys watching baseball and attending the games with her mom. Her future plans include attending Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in either Austin, Texas or Boulder, Colorado and earning a diploma in Baking and Pastry Arts and eventually owning her own bakery. Emily’s most memorable high school moment was receiving a 1 on her solo at state (the band equivalent to medaling in a sporting event). She had been working on her marimba solo for two years and was completely self-taught. When asked the most important lesson she has learned while attending SISD Emily states, “I have learned that I cannot measure my personal success based off of the achievements of others.” Her advice to underclassmen is, “Take advantage of your high school years. The time goes by faster than you think and if you spend too much time worrying about the future, you won’t make any memories to remember the past.” Emily’s most influential teachers during her school years are Mrs. Jana Knowlton, Ms. Chelsey Merrigan, Mrs. Dixie Smith, and Mrs. Cheryl Whitefield.
Shad Whiteley is the son of Shane and Starla Whiteley. He has one older sister, Shaylyn Whiteley. Shad is active in Spearman Lynx football, basketball, tennis, and track, National Honor Society, Student Council, and First Baptist Church Youth Council. Shad has been named Academic All District in varsity football, basketball, track, and tennis, Honorable Mention Defensive Back, and 1st Team All-District point guard. He received the Lynx Football and Basketball Fighting Heart Award and has also been listed on the All A Honor Roll throughout high school. In his spare time, Shad enjoys hanging out with friends and watching “The Office”. Shad’s plans after high school are currently undecided, but he does plan on attending college. Shad says the best thing about Spearman High School is, “I like how everyone can have a relationship with each other and how willing people are to help.” His advice to underclassmen is, “Never take the time you are having or the friends around you for granted. It goes by too quickly.” When asked to describe his senior year in three words he states, “Gone too fast!” Shad’s most influential teacher during his school years is Mrs. Cheryl Whitefield.

Lizet Olmos is the Gus Birdwell Elementary assistant principal. Olmos is in her second year in this position. She was the elementary counselor prior to being the assistant principal.
It is rare for Olmos to not have a good day at school. “The students and staff are the perfect combination for a good day. The sprinkles on top are when I see kids exchanging compliments or get to witness a student feeling proud after a shout out,” reminisced Olmos.
A fun fact about Olmos is she likes to sing and dance. A hidden talent of hers is that she has a sixth sense. “I can predict things pretty accurately. Too bad it hasn’t helped with the lottery!” laughed Olmos.
“I feel proud to be part of the GBE family. It really is a great place to be, and we have the best students and amazing staff, said Olmos.
Some wisdom she would like to pass on is, “Learn to love yourself exactly for who you are. It can be so easy to compare ourselves, but God has made us all perfect. This world needs you to be just you.”
Her parents inspire her by being kind and hard working. “Throughout my day, I can hear their words of wisdom about giving the best of myself to serve others, shared Olmos.
A quote she lives by is, “Let all that you do be done in Love.” Corinthians 16:14.

● Cheer and Band buses will park on the South side of the stadium next to the railing along Avenue I.
● Any inflatables are asked to enter through the Southwest gate. At all other times, this entry is for players and officials only.

● Visiting fans will park on the south side of the stadium and enter and exit through the South ticket gate. Restrooms and concessions are located on the visiting side.

Karina Baca is the assistant principal at Spearman Junior High. This is her first year in administration. She taught third and fifth grade at the elementary campus.
What makes Baca’s day start out to be a great day is when she gets to see all those smiles early in the morning as the students come to school. “The best thing about being a principal is that I get to see All the students. I get to build relationships with students and staff members,” shared Baca.
If she could pass on wisdom to the students she would share,” The wisdom I would like to pass on to the students is to never quit trying. In life there will be more no’s than yeses but keep striving for the best.”
Her children inspire her and the quote she lives by is “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11.
Bingo for a books was a success! We had 141 people in attendance and many staff volunteered to help! Many books were given away and much fun was had! 💜
