The SJH GT students recently had the opportunity to watch a 3 D Printer in operation. GT student Braeden Maestas brought his machine to school to share with the class and allow the students to create some pretty cool objects. Earlier in the year the students created their own Newton's Cradle which represents the third law of motion. The students have also been involved in studying optical illusions, and physical change. This is a great bunch of students that are always wanting to explore new ideas.

National Athletic Training Month is celebrated in March. This celebration is a time to recognize the expertise of athletic trainers. Athletic trainers are instrumental in the health care of the athletes. Michael Lozano has been an athletic trainer for fourteen years. Lozano is a Spearman High School graduate and has worked for SISD for eleven years as an athletic trainer and teacher. He teaches Sports Medicine to students interested in athletic training or any health care profession. “The class allows students to learn from the staff athletic trainer and provide care for their peers. They provide hydration, taping, wrapping, and immediate care to the athletes. The student athletic program helps students learn valuable skills, responsibility for their self and others, communication between students and coaches, “replied Lozano. Lozano’s responsibilities include: providing immediate acute care, evaluate, treat, refer, rehab, and recondition all athletic injuries within the school district as well as injury prevention and health promotion, maintain medical documentation of student athletes, provide medical coverage for all home athletic events and travel with varsity sports, strength and conditioning coordinator for all girl’s athletic and boys and girls 6th grade pre-athletics, organizes student physicals each year, and completes a minimum of fifty hours of continuing education every two years to maintain his certification. Athletic trainers have many proud moments. “I'm mostly proud of helping students get through that feeling of fear and dread when a severe injury hits. For many student-athletes, they feel that sports are their whole life and when they sustain a season-ending injury they feel lost, isolated, and like their identity has been taken from them. It helps these students to have someone who can guide them in their recovery, who's seen it before, and can reassure them that they can get back to normal. Every school needs an athletic trainer,” shared Lozano. Lozano’s students have been very successful. “Spearman ISD's student athletic trainers go on to do great things! Multiple have gone on to Division I college athletic training programs, completed internships with professional sports teams, one is currently in medical school, and one is now a Doctor of Physical Therapy. I believe athletic training teaches students important principles that will carry over throughout their life: time management, work ethic, and putting others before themself,” proudly shared Lozano. Congratulations on making a tremendous difference in the lives of students and for the amazing work you do at SISD.

Teachers and students at Spearman High School had a surprise assembly to recognize a deserving teacher for the January 2024 Teacher on the Rise Award. The faculty, students, and administrators were in attendance for a surprise celebration. The Teacher on the Rise was launched in the Amarillo and Panhandle area. Teacher on the Rise is a student/parent nominated teacher recognition program sponsored by United Supermarkets, Mrs. Baird’s Bread, Amarillo Custom Box Company, and Sports Zone. Every month three winners are selected (one elementary, one middle school, and one high school) from across the Texas panhandle. All winning teachers receive a great prize package worth more than $300.00. The student who nominates a winning teacher receives a $50.00 gift card. Spearman High School Principal, James Layman, Teacher on the Rise, Bradley Smith, and Sport Zone representative, Chad Riggins recognized Lisa Carthel as the January 2024 high school winner. Genesis Chavira nominated Carthel for this award: Ms. Carthel! I have decided to nominate this awesome teacher because of the good teacher she is! I have had great teachers, but Ms. Carthel is one that stood out the most. My sophomore year I took college chemistry (not an easy class), and my teacher was Ms. Carthel. Ms. Carthel never let us have free time and always had us writing notes and completing assignments as she prepared us for our quizzes. I used to think wow, this is one of my hardest classes I had but one of the classes where I mostly learned. On the days where I didn’t understand the assignment, I would ask Ms. Carthel to explain, and she would explain it again for me. The labs we did were fun and entertaining but required most thinking. Later on, as I entered my junior year I decided to take cosmetology. As soon as I went into that class, I was already prepared thanks to Ms. Carthel! I knew what to expect and to always turn in my assignments on time. I even came up personally to Ms. Carthel and told her that her college class helped me in actual college. As of right now I am taking honors physics with Ms. Carthel where she still makes sure we learn and keeps us prepared for later on. Other students might think she is mean, but I believe she is just doing her job right. Ms. Carthel is a person who I would like to learn from and not only as a teacher but as a person. Outside of school she is always asking me how I’ve been and giving me advice. I am very lucky to have Ms. Carthel as a teacher! Spearman ISD is proud of you! Congratulations on a well-deserved award!
